The Alliance for Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities for Conservation in Africa (AICA) on the 5th September 2025, convened as a powerful consultative meeting that set the stage for critical reflections and future actions. This platform became a space where narratives that often separated Indigenous Peoples from Local Communities were openly questioned and reimagined. For too long, policies and discourses have tended to frame Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities as distinct, sometimes even competing, groups. AICA provided the courage to challenge these assumptions & narratives, showing that both groups share intertwined struggles for land, culture, livelihoods, and resource rights. The consultative meeting did more than foster dialogue, it created a unifying voice that called for solidarity, mutual recognition, and joint advocacy. It emphasized that meaningful conservation cannot thrive without addressing both the specific rights of Indigenous Peoples and the collective realities of Local Communities. By centering these discussions, AICA paved the way for inclusive frameworks that value equity, justice, and shared ownership. The meeting was not only consultative but was transformative, laying down a foundation for stronger collaboration and redefining the narrative toward unity, strength, and common purpose in conservation and rights advocacy.
